In this paper, we offer a materialist deconstruction of AI hype, breaking down how the AI industry and aligned actors use speculative narratives about AI to build their desired political and economic conditions. Based on this analysis, we contribute a playbook of resistance tactics to counter AI hype and open up alternative trajectories for AI futures.
